INFRASTRUCTURE UPGRADE CREATES SAFER LEARNING ENVIRONMENT

Boitumelo Day Care Center has been transformed to create a nurturing environment for young children to thrive.

Quality early childhood development begins with safe, functional and stimulating learning environments. Yet many Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres in underserved communities continue to face infrastructure challenges that limit their ability to provide quality care and education. In Mothotlung Extension 2, De Wildt Solar has responded to this need through the upgrade of Boitumelo Day Care Centre, creating a secure and nurturing space where 30 young children can learn and play.

These improvements position the care centre to meet the compliance requirements of both the Department of Basic Education and the Department of Social Development, a critical step towards accessing operational grant funding currently unavailable to the centre due to its registration status.

The completed facility includes a 12-metre container subdivided into two classrooms, a 6-metre container classroom, and a 6-metre service container housing an office, kitchen, and sickbay. All units feature secure entrances and burglar-proofed windows. A fully serviced ablution facility with four child-appropriate toilets and two for educators, connected to the main waterborne sewer system, was also installed.

The centre has further benefited from shaded outdoor areas, a prepared play area and a fully enclosed perimeter secured with galvanised mesh fencing, alongside controlled pedestrian and vehicular access points.

Boitumelo Day Care Centre was identified for this targeted infrastructure support after initial training and development interventions, conducted as part of the solar plant’s broader ECD programme, revealed significant gaps in the centre’s physical conditions. Site visits confirmed that the centre was operating under difficult circumstances, with limited facilities that placed considerable strain on educators and caregivers who remained committed to delivering quality care despite inadequate resources.

The next phase of support will focus on facilitating the centre’s formal registration with the relevant government departments, ensuring that the infrastructure investment is matched by the operational sustainability needed to make it last.
