Over 4000 learners across six schools, within the Sol Plaatje communities, are benefitting from a Reading Coaches and Teacher Assistants Programme. Moreover, this initiative is promoting local job creation by providing employment opportunities to 12 young women.
Funded by Matla A Bokone Solar, in collaboration with the Frances Baard District Department of Education, the Reading Coaches and Teacher Assistants Initiative will continue into the 2022 academic year, since its commencement in 2021.
“The focus of the first quarter was to reintegrate our 12 Young Women Reading Coaches and Teacher Assistants back into the beneficiary primary schools, provide them with refresher training and further training to align them with the “National Reading Champions Activities”,” explained Lesego Mosiane, Community Liaison Officer for Matla A Bokone Solar.
During the 2022 academic year, particular attention will be paid to learners in grades 3 and 4. The remainder of the learners within the beneficiary schools will benefit from the initiative through spelling bees and reading champion activities.
“The programme is truly helpful as some of the children in our schools have difficulty with spelling, reading, and writing. These are the issues that hinder their progress during their schooling career,” said Khethang Motsoari, Chief Education Specialist, Northern Cape Department of Education, Frances Baard District.
Furthermore, the targeted schools have participated in the “Provincial Oral Reading Fluency Assessments”. These schools include Barkley West Primary School, Isago Primary School, Mosalakae Primary School, Stillwater Primary School, Tshwarelela Primary School, and Waterworks Primary School.
