CAREER EXPO AND SKILLS SUPPORT FOR LEARNERS

June 2022.

Nearly 3 000 high school learners have benefited from a Career Guidance and Leadership Development Programme, designed to empower and enhance their career choices. Taking place in Kimberly, Northern Cape, the programme kicked off in Q1/2202 with a career expo for Grade 12 learners; and skills training for Grade 10 learners; within the beneficiary communities.

The programme, funded by Matla A Bokone Solar, formed part of the solar plant’s Youth Skills Development efforts, and provided Grade 12 learners with the opportunity to conduct career research, network, and explore a variety of high school exit options. Learners were also informed about the different career fields, and scholarships available to them.

“The expo gave us a good overview of the career options and opportunities available at various tertiary institutions. A highlight for me was when the ‘Wholesale and Retail SETA’ presenter mentioned that they have bursaries for almost all fields of study across the country,” said one of the participating learners from Pescodia High School.

Additionally, close to 1 300 Grade 10 learners, from high schools in the area, attended a module training programme called “Knowing Me, Knowing My Future.” In this programme, learners were trained on three modules, namely Study Skills, Goal Setting, and Time Management.

“The training has been a great success and we are proud to have supported the learners in this way. As a result of this training, we saw substantial improvements in the learners’ memory, time management, study goals, learning styles, note taking, participation in study groups, as well as setting of goals. We are committed to empowering and supporting the youth so that they can make a positive impact in their communities,” explained Lesego Mosiane, Community Liaison Officer for Matla A Bokone Solar.

This overarching programme is projected to impact close to 5 000 High School Learners throughout the 2022 Academic Year. High schools benefiting from this programme include Delportshoop Combined School, Emmanuel High School, Roodepan High School, Greenpoint High School, Floors No.2 High School, Emang Mmogo High School, Tshireletso High School, Xhunkhwesa High School, Tetlanyo High School, Kimberley Boys High School, Pescodia High School, Thabane High School, and Vuyolwethu High School.
